What are sumac onions? They are marinated red onions that you can use to top any meal with a flavor explosion. This is a Middle Eastern-inspired recipe for how to make easy pickled onions.
I’m obsessed with Middle Eastern flavors right now. And since there are no Middle Eastern restaurants near me, it’s time to play with some recipes at home. I want to travel around the Mediterranean so bad!
What Are Sumac Onions?
Sumac onions are Middle Eastern style marinated onions. These easy pickled onions have a beautiful lemony flavor thanks to the sumac spice, balanced perfectly with salt, vinegar, crushed chilies, and parsley. Mmmmm mmmm!
I’ve had them with every meal since I first made them!
Are marinated red onions keto? 1 whole red onion contains 8.2 g of net carbs, so a tablespoon of these keto onions sprinkled on top of your meal is a keto-friendly flavor bomb of about 0.4 grams net carbs! Yeah for low-carb yums!
What Do You Do With Sumac Onions?
You know when you meet someone who makes you all warm and tingly and you want to do everything with them? That’s what sumac pickled onions are like! You will want to top everything with them including salads, chicken, pork, beef, burgers, soups, eggs, and pretty much anything else.
How to Make Sumac Red Onions
Like a great date, sumac onions are super easy! …nope… That did not come out right….
But seriously, these onions are a ridiculously easy way to make any meal an adventure. It’s as easy as mixing all the ingredients and letting the onions bath in them like they’re relaxing at a spa.
These babies only need 30 minutes if you’re in a hurry, but they’ll just keep getting better stored in the fridge overnight and for the next few days.
How long do sumac onions last in the fridge? Good question. I don’t know. But Google says somewhere between 3 weeks and a few months. Between the salt and vinegar, it should be good for a while.
Not only do they taste amazing, but they are beautiful as well. No need for garnish. You’re Instagram-ready with your #foodporn (tag us with @theprimaldesire!).
No Middle Eastern restaurants near me? No problem! Marinated red onions are a simple way to bring some magic to any meal.

Thanks for the comment! We’ve been adding sumac onions to everything, but I’ll have to try just the sumac spice in salads. Thank you for the suggestion!
